Any tips for a first time tropical tank owner? Guppys, Neon Tetras, Khuli Loaches and Catfish?

Hi, I’ve done the nitrogyn cycle on my tank and have had it for around 8 weeks, basically I know nothing about tanks, didn’t even realise you need a water conditioner when you clean it. I’ve got the temperature set for 25*C, and have a water filter, an lots of plants. One of my guppies has just had babies, about 10. Only recently found out you need a ratio of 1 male to 2 females @ least.

You may think this is crazy (my husband sure does) but I have tried raising guppies in a few different homes. The places that we lived and were on our own well water, I could not get the guppies (or any live-bearer) to survive. The places we had town water (the yucky town filtered floride and chlorine crap they make you drink) My guppies thrived to the point of overcrowding the tank. We have lived for 12 years now with our own well water and still have the same problem so I get big jugs of water to fill the live bearer tanks and do water changes.

A syphon type gravel vaccume is ideal for water changes (monthly is pleanty or you will end up dissrupting the balance of natural bacteria in you water) simply use it to vaccume the gravel and discard the water (this water is very good for watering and fertalizing any house plants you have).

You have a good size tank (I’d say about 60 gallons) the larger the tank is the easier it is to keep clean so you might be able to go 6 weeks and then change 25% of the water. If your water is cloudy it is not necissarily because it is dirty. Dirty tanks can still have clear water.

You should do your water changes before you change the filter. Because when you change the water you stir up alot of crap. If you wait until the water has settled and then change the filter material a lot of the sludge will get caught up in the old filter before you discard it.

I like to use a porduct called Cycle in my tanks. I swear by it.

Get some snails or a couple plecostomus’ to keep the algae down. The pleco’s can grow up to a foot depending on the type, but I wouldn’t worry unless you have live plants that they will harm if they uproot them.

Make sure you have the proper PH level for the type of fish you keep (7is good for your’s).

Also a long handled glass scrubber to scrape off the algae on the glass before you vaccume is a good idea.

I would keep the guppies 3 females to 1 male.

Make sure you don’t have any sharp rocks (like lava rock) the your loaches would scrape themselves on.

If you only cleaned your tank once a year it would get very dirty and your fish would start to die or all be dead. Don’t do this. It would also stink.
